Samba dates back to the arrival of the first slaves in what today is known as the northeastern state of Bahia, Rodrigo Pereira da Silva Rosa, a linguistics professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), told Efe. It is the cry of the slaves transformed into music and dance, a reflection of religious traditions like Umbanda and Candomble and a constant flurry of melodic innovation that continues the long struggle against racism and discrimination, experts say. Known internationally as the essence of the Rio Carnival, samba is much more than pageantry and glamor. 2, International Samba Day, the South American giant commemorates that dance, musical style and cultural phenomenon even as it recalls some troubled aspects of the country’s history. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.Rio de Janeiro, Dec 2 (EFE).- Brazil’s most emblematic musical genre was not always synonymous with Carnival and joie de vivre but instead was viewed as morally dubious and even outlawed altogether. Over the years the popularity of the Carnival-style samba music grew, along with the extravagance of the costumes and parades. Around the 1920s the now-famous samba schools began to form and practise the music and dance, to perform at the Carnival parades. There are many types of samba music and dance to experience, from slow and swingy to upbeat and electric (think Carnival music). What many travelers don’t realize is that samba music is an wide-ranging genre, much like jazz in the United States. For a start, read our guide to getting into the groove in Brazil. Don’t worry if you haven’t quite cracked it, the’ll be an eager, chiselled Brazilian man at any Samba party who will be more than happy to show you the moves. Practice alone and you’ll get the hang of it in no time. Get this right and you’re half way there. Although some may be better than others, it’s a dance free for all and begins with a few simple steps – one, two, three, one, two, three. It’s a dance that connects Brazilians natives and a rhythm they can all relate to. Samba music and dance lie at the very heart of Brazilian culture.

This vision of the world harbors inaccuracies of its own, but generally it comes much closer to depicting the continents as they are. "Once students feel like the school isn't being truthful, there's a tendency to shut down and reject information," Frederick-Clarke tells WBUR.Įnter Peters' projection - which is also known as the Gall-Peters projection, since it's virtually identical to a projection put forward by the Scottish cartographer James Gall in the 19th century. And that can have a real effect on students of all backgrounds. Alaska looks bigger than Mexico and Germany is in the middle of the picture, not to the north - because Mercator moved the equator."Īll this adds up to a view of the world that sets one set of cultures center stage, while marginalizing and even radically shrinking others. "South America is made to look about the same size as Europe, when in fact it is almost twice as large, and Greenland looks roughly the size of Africa when it is actually about 14 times smaller. The Guardian breaks down some of the most notable discrepancies: The trouble is that his projection, which places northern Europe at the heart of the world and shrinks Africa and South America, is far from precise. The Meractor projection ( Creative Commons/Daniel R. And the central point on the globe for him was, of course, Europe. For Gerardus Mercator - the Flemish cartographer who in 1569 came up with the map still most commonly used today - the central goal was to support navigation along colonial trade routes. The issue rests partly in the problem of how to transpose the 3-D shape of Earth onto a two-dimensional sheet of paper. It only seems right that we would present them with an accurate view of themselves." "Maps that they are presented with generally classify the places that they're from as small and insignificant. "This is the start of a three-year effort to decolonize the curriculum in our public schools," said Colin Rose, assistant superintendent of opportunity and achievement gaps for Boston Public Schools, tells The Guardian. Introduced at a conference in Germany in 1974, historian Arno Peters' map aims to fix the Mercator's inaccuracies, which vastly exaggerate the size of land masses approaching the north and south poles - and in doing so, help prop up a decidedly eurocentric worldview. It's that map that hangs in most classrooms throughout the U.S., including those in Boston.īy contrast, the map known as the Peters projection, which city authorities are now meting out to many of the city's classrooms, is a relative fledgling. When many people picture a map of the world, what they're probably thinking of is a Mercator projection, a representation that despite its apparent distortions has been around more than 400 years. That said, many discount airlines in Europe like WOW Air and Germanwings have gone bust, as they couldn’t sustain the low cost model. Short distances across the continent means more flights can be possible with a comparatively smaller fuel requirement. What goes without saying is that Europe has a massive geographical advantage. These airlines also have a low turnaround time, which speaks to a high degree of focus on efficiency. The airlines standardize the type of plane (easyJet uses Airbus planes alone, and Ryanair only flies Boeing 737), which helps reduce auxiliary expenses like training the flight personnel, and maintenance costs. The reason why flights in Europe are cheap is that their operations are very lean. Thanks to such low prices, especially in Europe, spending weekends on the sandy beaches of Positano or snowboarding in the Alps of Austria cease to be mere pipe dreams – they’re realistic, completely affordable travel experiences. Companies like Spirit and Southwest have been offering low-cost airfare for a long time in the United States, where the concept first came into being. Ryanair was the first airline to establish this model in Europe, but the idea is by no means new. Compared to traditional carriers, these airlines offer a no-frills service, commensurate with their costs. WHAT ARE THE LOW COST AIRLINES IN EUROPEĪs the name suggests, low-cost airlines (also called low-cost carriers or LLC) help willing travelers fly cheap flights in Europe. This article will tell you everything about how low cost airlines operate in Europe, which are the key players, pros and cons of flying with budget airlines and tips to find cheap flights in Europe. Ubiquitous as they are, these provide an excellent means for European travelers to zip across the continent at, sometimes, absurdly low prices. Plane travel has historically been something of a luxury, but budget airlines have changed the travel game massively – in Europe, in particular. That’s the magic of low-cost airlines in Europe. Some things to keep in mind while you read through the below are the weight of your chosen fabric, the design style of your home, and the physical space you have for your rod. There are many different rod choices, and a number of brackets and accessories to choose from. If you are wanting a sewn pleat, we recommend choosing a rod, or a track with your curtain hanging below it, as some sewn pleats can become a bit distorted when covering the track – especially when open. Curtain rods are highly customisable, so are a good choice for those wishing to achieve a cohesive interior design.Īn important point about curtain headers: With many variations in colour, style, and accessories, curtain rods can be complimentary to your curtains, or can be made to stand out and add opulence or wow-factor to your home. While the track will inevitably be seen when the curtains are open, it can be hidden behind the curtain header when the curtains are drawn shut and are simple enough designs to hide in plain sight.Ĭurtain tracks are ideal for those either wishing to make the curtain and track blend into the background, those who want simplicity, or for those on a tighter budget.Ĭurtain rods, however, are meant to be featured, with the curtain hanging below them. The main difference between the two is the aesthetic.Ĭurtain tracks are primarily chosen to be discreet. The first decision you will need to make is whether to get tracks or rods. So, by the end of this blog post, you should walk away with the knowledge and confidence to choose a track or rod suited to the style and functionality of your home, but if you still need a bit more guidance or information, our friendly team is always available to help either in person, over the phone, or via email. Choosing new custom curtains and rods can be a very exciting yet daunting process. These ligaments may also begin to rub on the joint capsule of the ankle. The irritated ligaments become vulnerable to getting pinched between the tibia and talus as the foot is dorsiflexed. Irritation in the lower edge of the AITFL and the front of the ATFL can thicken these ligaments. Over time, irritation along the front edge of the ankle can lead to impingement. This is especially true for athletes who repeatedly bend the ankle upward (dorsiflexion), such as baseball catchers, basketball and football players, and dancers. Athletes who have had several mild ankle sprains or one severe sprain are most likely to have anterior impingement. Pinching of tissues in the front of the ankle is called anterior impingement. Related Document: South Mountain Physical Therapy's Guide to Ankle Anatomy An os trigonum sometimes causes problems of impingement in the back of the ankle. About 15 percent of people have an os trigonum. This separation of the os trigonum from the talus is usually not a fracture. The separate piece of bone is called an os trigonum. In some people the lateral tuberosity is not united to the talus. Two small bony bumps, called tuberosities, project from the back of the talus, one on the inside ( medial) edge and one on the outer ( lateral) edge. The calcaneus extends backward below the ankle, forming a shelf on which the talus rests. The joint formed between these two bones is called the subtalar joint. The talus rests on the the heelbone (the calcaneus). The ATFL goes from the tip of the fibula and angles forward to connect with the talus. The anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) supports the outer edge of the ankle. The ligament that crosses just above the front of the ankle and connects the tibia to the fibula is called the anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament (AITFL). Strong ligaments surround and support the ankle joint. The ankle is a synovial joint, meaning it is enclosed in a joint capsule that contains a lubricant called synovial fluid. The ankle joint is a hinge that allows the foot to move up ( dorsiflexion) and down ( plantarflexion). The fibula is the small, thin bone along the outer edge of the tibia. The tibia is the main bone of the lower leg. The ankle joint is formed where the bones of the lower leg, the tibia and the fibula, connect above the anklebone, called the talus.
